Summary
Thirteen-year-old exchange student Jenna has nabbed an appointment in New York's coolest hair salon, but when her teacher insists she stay with the group at the boring Metropolitan Museum, she storms off and stumbles into what she thinks is a fancy-dress party. And it is a party. In ancient Egypt. 3500 years ago. Once Jenna accepts she's really travelled back in time, she realises she has to work out a way home - with only her big mouth, a smart phone and a pair of second-hand Marc Jacobs sandals to get her out alive. Jenna's attempts to bluff her way out of her precarious situation are often brave, sometimes ingenious and always funny

Jenna is 13, and should be enjoying a holiday with her mum in New York - shopping, getting her hair done at the best salon in town. But her mother has brought her latest boyfriend along. Clive is boring in the extreme, and worse, he's encouraging Jenna's mum to spend far too long in fusty museums instead of heading off to Jenna's long-anticipated hair appointment. Infuriated by this behaviour, Jenna decides to head off alone, using some money given to her by her grandmother. But fate takes a turn through the auspices of a mangy-looking cat ...and Jenna opens a door into a party in full swing. In ancient Egypt -- 3500 years ago. There she attracts the amused attention of the partygoers, but Satiah, destined to marry Djehutymes, heir to the Pharaoh Hatshepsut, isn't laughing, and arranges to have Jenna removed. Jenna is forced to become one of a group of slave girls, including the kindly Ebio, two years older than she is, and chubby Shebi, who delights in bullying her. Jenna is put to work in the kitchens, but her complete inability to do anything but the most basic of tasks gets her into trouble with the cook, and with Nefret, who is in charge of the slave girls. At first incredulous about the prospect of time travel, Jenna comes to realise that she is in real trouble. An attempt to bluff her way out of things by pretending to use her mobile phone as a magic artifact backfires horribly when the Prince states his intention to invade her home country of 'Oztrawlya' and marry her into the bargain. Jenna tries to flee, but an encounter with a hippo and then with some determined soldiers puts a stop to that, and she has to think again. Jenna enlists Ebio's help in a new escape plot, arranging a daring swap with Satiah, who has loved Dhjehutymes since they were children. Jenna races against time to be reunited with the mangy cat who has led her through time, and against all odds, finds herself back in the museum. Now all she has to do is explain to her mother why she's wearing an Egyptian tunic, and why the statue of Thutmosis III is carrying what looks like a familiar black rectangle in his hand ..
