Summary
In 1551, King John III of Portugal, whose wife, Catherine, is a Habsburg, decides that the best wedding present they can give to the Archduke Maximilian - a Habsburg - is the elephant that has been living in Lisbon for the last two years - a gift from the Portuguese colonies in India. A bitter-sweet fable for adults, full of Saramago's usual wry comments on religion, politics and the powers-that-be, "The Elephant's Journey" is a truly delightful book, teaching us that there is no 'real life' waiting for us at the end of the road: it is the travelling that counts

The Archduke is currently in Valladolid in Spain with his new wife, but will be returning home to Vienna shortly. The elephant, Solomon, along with his mahout (or driver) Subhro, is living in dismal conditions, his initial popularity having long worn off. Subhro is given two new suits of clothes to wear and Solomon a long over-due wash, and off they go. The journey, though fog and snow, and across the sea, is long and arduous, but Solomon and his driver stay strong, becoming ever-more bonded to each other. As they travel, Solomon gains a reputation for being a miracle worker and, on arriving in Vienna, is revered as a hero and a saint. When he dies, however, he is skinned and his front legs cut off to be used as umbrella stands. A bitter-sweet fable for adults, full of Saramago's usual wry comments on religion, politics and the powers-that-be, The Elephant's Journey is a truly delightful book, teaching us that there is no 'real life' waiting for us at the end of the road: it is the travelling that counts
